Livingstone student-athletes provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need

November 20, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

For the third consecutive year, Several Salisbury-area families will enjoy a hearty Thanksgiving meal next week thanks to Livingstone College student-athletes and coaches.

The holiday benevolence is just one small way in which Livingstone athletes and coaches give back to the community.

“This is our third annual Thanksgiving Food Drive,” said Jaime Kent, head athletic trainer at Livingstone. “We work with the Rowan County Department of Social Services and adopt families to support during the Thanksgiving season. We told them we could support five families this year, but it looks like we’ll be able to provide enough food for eight families.”

The food drive is being organized by members of the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, or SAAC. Kent, the senior female administrator in the athletic department, is the SAAC advisor. Livingstone junior Juan Mortimer, a computer information systems major from The Bahamas, is the organization’s president.

Mortimer isn’t traveling home to The Bahamas for the holiday but will be in Raleigh with his girlfriend’s family. He said he can’t imagine not being able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

“I just want to ensure other people get the same kind of opportunity I’m getting,” he said. “I feel that sometimes people get too caught up in the Thanksgiving festivities and lose appreciation for the small things in life. Everybody can’t afford to purchase a turkey and all of the trimmings needed for a full Thanksgiving meal.”

Mortimer plans to help deliver the food on Monday, just as he did a year ago. The student-athletes really enjoy the annual food drive, Kent said.

“The students really like doing this because they feel like they’re giving back to the community,” she said. “I think a big reason they enjoy it is they appreciate the way people from the community come out to support them at their athletic events. Also, they know food is something that, unfortunately, some people have to worry about this time of the year, and they want every family to have a Thanksgiving Dinner.”

While all of the coaches participate, Kent said Justin Davis always goes the extra mile.

“Every year Justin Davis does a great job getting the kids to participate,” Kent said. “He always takes two families, even though he’s the only coach for track and field and cross country. He does a great job corralling his kids, and they always donate extra food.”

Davis, a Salisbury native, said providing Thanksgiving food for families in need is simply the right thing to do.

“I think it’s great to be able to give back to the community and give someone who might not normally have a Thanksgiving meal the opportunity to enjoy one,” Davis said. “According to the U.S. Census, 18.5 percent of Rowan County residents live below the poverty level. My family has always been fortunate to have a great meal for Thanksgiving, so I know how it feels to get that, but some people don’t.

“Although we’re providing meals for only eight or so families, and for just one day, our hope is those families will realize there are people out there who want to help,” Davis continued. “Likewise, we at Livingstone hope our efforts will be duplicated by other businesses and organizations because it’s not how much you give but rather that you give.”

Okoboji student-athletes are making a difference

November 20, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

Okoboji is participating in the Iowa Hall of Pride’s new community service initiative, the “Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge.” The Okoboji varsity and JV girls basketball teams will be hosting a “Pride Scrimmage” on Friday, Nov. 21, with the JV game starting at 5:45 p.m. and the varsity game to follow against Estherville Lincoln Central.

As part of the Pride Challenge, all participating schools have identified a community service project that is meaningful for their school and community. The Okoboji girls basketball program has chosen to participate in the local Backpack Ministry program. All fans who attend this game are asked to bring items that can be found at www.bojibasketball.com to the game to receive $1 off their $5 admission.

Many schools already incorporate community service as an extension of learning in the classroom. The Pride Challenge is highlighted by “Pride Scrimmages,” where participating schools are permitted to use one of their three allotted basketball scrimmages to play a live game under all normal game conditions, although the game does not count on a team’s record. The inaugural statewide Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge takes place Nov. 17, through Saturday, Dec. 20, 2014. A complete rundown of Pride Challenge information is available online at www.iowahallofpride.com.

Proceeds from the Okoboji Pride Scrimmage will go directly to the Backpack Ministry less a $250 contribution to the Richard Jacobson Education Fund at the Iowa Hall of Pride. Those contributions will be used to further the Hall of Pride’s mission to “educate the future” through their educational programs and work with students and schools across the state.

The Iowa Hall of Pride opened to the public on Feb. 23, 2005. The interactive museum imparts a sense of place to all who visit and preserves our rich Iowa heritage. The museum features dozens of exhibits that engage the visitor in experiencing the stories of Iowa’s communities and their heroes. There is a strong emphasis on education and how it has helped shape the people of Iowa. A visit to the Iowa Hall of Pride is a unique, one-of-a-kind experience that takes visitors on a nostalgic trip in a very high tech, interactive way.

ATH: Hofstra Student-Athletes Help The Community With Shake-A-Rake

November 19, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

Hempstead, NY – More than 170 Hofstra University student-athletes were part of the more than 300 University student volunteers who participated in the University’s annual Shake-A-Rake program, sponsored by the Office of Off-Campus Living and Commuting Student Services, on Saturday, November 15.

The annual Shake-A-Rake program aims to connect Hofstra University with the surrounding community. Along with the cleanup of neighborhood lawns, student volunteers also helped out in a garden and a community center. With more than 300 student volunteers, this year’s Shake-A-Rake program was the largest in school history.

Hofstra student-athletes and members of Greek life, international students and club leaders traveled around Uniondale and Hempstead to rake 51 lawns for elderly and disabled residents. Students from the Center for Civic Engagement also helped plant 550 tulip bulbs in the neighboring streets around the University.

“The sun is shining, it’s nice outside, and the whole field hockey team is here. It feels great to give back,” Jonel Boileau, a senior international business major and captain of the Pride Field Hockey team commented.

The entire Hofstra Baseball team, one of 14 Pride teams participating in Shake-A-Rake, joined together to clean up an acre-and-a-half of land at the John J. Byrne Community Center in Uniondale. When asked if the day was enjoyable, junior industrial engineering major and Pride catcher Christopher Hardardt said “I like raking leaves. It’s just fun to me. Plus, I get to work with a great group of guys.”

The Hofstra Department of Athletics received a Good Neighbor Award last year for its continuing service.

Beautifying the local area is another important part of the day’s engagement. Hofstra University donated 550 tulip bulbs that were planted in certain parts of the Uniondale area. Volunteer groups met up at Capital One Bank on Front Street to begin their planting activities.

In less than two hours, each lawn, garden, and community center had been raked completely. Some community members came outside with the students to help. This year’s event was very much a bonding experience for Hofstra and the local area.

Queens College Track and Field Teams Participate in a Midnight Run

November 19, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

New York – The Queens College track and field teams took time away from their pre-season prep work recently, to participate in a midnight run. The event took place overnight in the streets of Manhattan.

Members of the team collected food items, toiletries and clothing prior to heading into the city. They sorted them out, and then climbed into the vans for a ride around the city.

The Knights gave out these items to various shelters and homeless people in and around New York City. The event had a profound effect on several members of the team.

Senior Anita Korosi reflected on the event, “It’s important to understand how many people are in need right in our own backyard. I will certainly remember the importance of helping others.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

November 18, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has held Jennifer Montgomery Breast Cancer Awareness month every October since 2007. The event is held in honor of Jennifer Montgomery, the wife of former Associate Athletic Director/Head Men’s Soccer Coach Robert Montgomery, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and is now in remission.
Every October students, athletes, faculty, staff, friends and the community participate in a walk to raise money and awareness, purchase raffle tickets for the opportunity to win one of the many great prize baskets that are annually available and buy “Think Pink” t-shirts and merchandise in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.

The department sells raffle tickets for the entire month of October and all prizes are donated by Adelphi’s athletic teams and members of the Adelphi community. All proceeds from the month will be donated to the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Awareness Hotline & Support Program. To date, the Athletics Department has collected over $20,000 for the program.
